Greyton / Genadendal is situated on the R406 between Caledon and Riviersonderend. The little hideaway is an idyllic retreat with the Riviersonderend and Gobos rivers channelling through the village and the Riviersonderend mountain range setting the backdrop for a picturesque getaway. Greyton Nature Reserve, off-road MTB trails, the decadent Saturday Morning Market and many other alluring characteristics lend to the charm of Greyton and Genadendal. Luckily, for many, they are less than two hours from Cape Town!
The most direct route from Cape Town to Greyton and Genadendal would be to take the N2 through Somerset West and over Sir Lowry's Pass. The view of False Bay is exceptional if you have a moment to look back and then, once you are at the top of the Hottentots-Hollands mountains, the changing landscape grows ever more enticing. Rocky valleys, serene lakes, and linear rows of grape vines and apple trees all lead the way until you reach the canola fields that mark your proximity to Caledon where you can then turn off onto the R406.
If you have two and a half hours to spare on the drive, then the Whale Coast route is a scenic option. As you drive along the N2 just before Sir Lowry's Pass turn off towards Gordon's Bay and simply follow the R44 that hugs the coastline. The winding road will take you past Rooi-Els, Pringle Bay, Betty's Bay and Kleinmond. Then follow the R44 and join the N2 again en route to Caledon where you can take the R406 toward Greyton and Genadendal.
If you are travelling from the Garden Route, then the trip will take just over four hours from George, which has an airport and is close to the end of the Garden Route if you start further East. Take the N2 and you will pass Groot Brakrivier, Mossel Bay, Albertinia, Riversdale, Heidelberg and Swellendam. Once you have passed through Riviersonderend you can either turn onto the R406 or drive further along until you see the sign to turn right towards Greyton and Genadendal.
All the routes highlight some of the Overberg’s unique aspects and natural beauty. The destination also showcases some incredible qualities where the leafy roads and leiwater streams bear many stories, hospitable places to stay, chic restaurants and outdoor adventures.
